Gliding is an aviation sport in which pilots harness the natural energy of the atmosphere — thermals, wave lift, and ridge lift — to cover hundreds of kilometres without a single drop of fuel.
The Czech team has long been among the world and European elite, with our pilots regularly competing for medals at World and European Championships.
Competitive gliding consists of achieving the highest average speed over a pre-set course, or the greatest distance flown. Simply put, the fastest pilot wins the competition day. Events typically run 10–14 days, with the overall winner being the pilot with the highest total points.
During competition, pilots must maintain concentration and performance in constantly changing and sometimes extreme meteorological conditions. Flying closer to the equator also means dealing with extreme ground temperatures. Major competitions often take place on the other side of the world.

The sky is slowly waking up and glider pilots are returning to the air after the winter break. With spring arriving earlier, favourable conditions are building and ground training is increasingly giving way to flying — the kind we all prefer.
The extraordinary results of the Czech female glider pilots at last year's Women's World Gliding Championships, where they won gold medals in every class, earned them the title of best aviation athletes of 2025 at the Aviation Athlete of the Year Gala.
The national team completed a winter training camp focused on theoretical preparation, physical and mental training, and competitive flying tactics.
